Monitoring

The monitoring bus offers a 3D rendering of the spatialization buses, through headphones, using the binaural algorithm.

Unlike standard binaural buses, the monitoring bus doesn't spatialize the sources in binaural, but instead spatializes the algorithm’s loudspeakers.

To listen to the 3D binaural rendering of a bus, click on ‘MONITORING’ in the desired bus page. Several buses can be monitored at the same time.

Head Tracking via OSC

Head tracking systems can be connected to a binaural bus (including the monitoring bus) through OSC. These systems track the head orientation thanks to a small device (some iOS or Android apps offer such functionalities).

It allows keeping the audio scene at the same position around you, even when moving your head. This generally greatly helps with hearing the right localization for the sounds.

Header Section

Gain

The Gain controls the level of the Moniotring bus, displayed in the Mixer as a fader. Use the Gain to adjust the level of the Monitoring between -60 dB (no signal) to +12dB.

Mute

Use the mute function to cut the monitoring audio output. This will not mute the Master.

Dim

When activated, it attenuates the Monitoring bus level by -20 dB.

Tab Section

Trim

Use the trim to adjust the level of the Monitoring bus between -80dB (no signal) and +30dB.

EQ | Dynamics

Check the Equalizer page and Dynamics page for more details.

HRTF

To configure a binaural bus, simply choose an HRTF File from the list. The "1040" HRTF file is provided by default with HOLOPHONIX as it is known to ensure good results for many people.

Different versions are available for the "1040" HRTF:

  • SOS16 (lower spectral quality, more CPU efficient),
  • SOS24 (intermediate spectral quality and CPU charge)
  • SOS32 (higher spectral quality, more CPU demanding)
info

You can also Import your own HRTF files. Please note that the sample rate of the HRTF you wish to import must match your project's sample rate.

ITD

The ITD (Interaural Time Difference) parameter allows you to adjust to your morphology to the interaural time difference that is due to the distance between your ears.

Headphones EQ

Any monitoring headphone will introduce a modification of the outgoing signal’s frequency reponse. But signal frequency response is very important for binaural to properly function and create a convincing 3D image.

HOLOPHONIX therefore offers to choose amongst 23 EQs corresponding to professional monitoring headphones to compensate for their natural EQ. This allows for a better localization perception.

Orientation

The orientation of the Binaural Listener can be adjusted with Yaw, Pitch, Roll, to rotate the entire audio scene. See rotation angles.
